Door Makeover

We painted all of the trim, so we had to paint the doors too.

However, I couldn’t decide if I wanted black or white - I looked at tons of pictures on pinterest, and finally I found an idea from One Life to Love.

So, I went at it - and spent less than $70 on all 7 doors!

White doors with beadboard and trim

Need:

  • Beadboard wallpaper (yes wallpaper!) - try to get pre-glued!
  • Wallpaper tray to wet the glue
  • White paint and primer
  • Caulk gun and super grab glue (in clear)
  • Painters caulk
  • Spray paint - silver (for door hinges)
  • Trim
  • Handsaw (with miter box)

Steps:

  1. We removed the doors from the hinges so we could paint the hinges - so you might be able to skip that - but it is probably worth it to take them down. AND remove door knobs, they are easy to put back on!
  2. Cut the wallpaper in two panels depending on the size of the door - sometimes the doors might be a few inches different in width (or height) so watch for those varying sizes!
  3. Wet the wallpaper and attach to the door (use the instructions included, often you have to let them sit and get sticky or whatever)
  4. Cut wood trim to go around wallpaper with mitered corners (so you can create a nice frame) - we used super grip glue in the caulk gun to attach and then stacked all the doors using their weight to get the glue to stick (let dry for at least 12 hours).
  5. I used painters caulk to fill in the gaps in the corners of the “frame” and the gaps between the glued trim and the door
  6. Paint and prime ALL of it - door, wallpaper, trim, etc. It took one coat primer, 3 coats of the Benjamin Moore Aura paint
  7. Reattach hinges (if you plan to paint them - do that before you rehang the door silly!), it takes a little science to attach them correctly so they close properly, but in most cases, it is fairly straight forward.

I love the look of the doors (for now it is a great way to have a new look, maybe someday we will make a splurge on new doors) - and cannot wait for our new door handles to come from Schlage (hopefully this week!)
